With the new forum there are now many advantages to register:

1. You will not have to fill in a name and an [optional] e-mail each time when posting or replying. The first time you Login, simply select "Forever" just to the left of the "Login" button and, if you don't press the "Logout" button, you never have to think about it, and you will have all features of the new Forum enabled.

2. As a member, you can hide your e-mail from viewing by anybody. When you register, it is RECOMMENDED you check the box to hide your e-mail. You can also hide it at any later time.

3. Unread topics or replies to topics are tagged with a "New" icon so you quickly can see things you haven't read since your last visit. Similarly, the Home page for the forum becomes really useful as it is tuned to you and you can do many things to improve your use of the Forum. A good example is the ability to filter on things you have not read - i.e., "show unread posts since last visit".

4. Can send Personal Messages to any other Member through this forum - not regular e-mail [although, with default settings, they will also get an e-mail as well so they don't necessarily need to check the Message Board to get your message].

5. Once you are registered you can customize your own settings somewhat for using this forum. For example

  • if you click on Profile -- >Modify Profile --> Account Related Settings, you can change the name displayed with your posts (e.g. "dgblancoman" could be your login, but "Dave White" could be displayed with posts if you choose). You should check this FIRST thing after you initially register. It is RECOMMENDED that you use an "all-lower-case" login name with no spaces or punctuation marks, and set your display Name to be something other members will recognize as in the example.
  • if you click on Profile -- >Modify Profile --> Look and Layout Preferences, then you can change things like message reply sort order (check or uncheck "show most recent posts at the top").

6. You can turn on e-mail notification for new topics in the Message Board or on any topic specifically. This sends you a message to your regular e-mail even though it may be hidden (recommended) for all internal Message Board activity. This is convenient if you check your e-mail regularly but only visit the Message Board occasionally. More on this topic is discussed here.

7. You can vote in polls, a new feature of this Board. You need to be a member because you only get one vote. For example, the NC3 board could post an opinion poll on a topic to get membership feedback on issues - quite a bit easier than having members attend board meetings.

8. Enables simple, membership-wide communication and announcements - for example, picnic rain out and other last minute special event notices

9. Guest logins with unvalidated e-mail provide potential for spam (the reason why nearly all forums do not allow totally anonymous posting)  and email which may not adhere to our club guidelines (i.e. nasty). For those reasons, you are required to register to post a new topic or reply to an existing topic.

So, PLEASE REGISTER to get the most out of your NCCC Forum experience. We can create a great on-line cycling community!

9. Guest logins with unvalidated e-mail provide potential for spam (the reason why nearly all forums do not allow totally anonymous posting)  and email which may not adhere to our club guidelines (i.e. nasty). Spam has not been a problem, but the latter has happened occasionally - Michael vonN was more patient than your current webmaster, but this did consume more of his time and emotional energy than most of us can tolerate. Your board moderator will continue to monitor and if problems occur, will consider making registration mandatory for full website functionality beyond viewing...
Because of misuse of anonymous posting, requiring undue moderation effort, this policy has changed. Since most people posting now are registered, this should cause little disruption. Please refer to Message Board Policy Change for a more detailed discussion and also Message Board registration process to ensure your registration goes smoothly.

This post is now largely moot for NCCC members, as your NCCC member login also works for posting on the Forum. Nevertheless, the advantages of being registered (above) still apply. For visiting users (out of town or country, or just interested vicariously in NCCC), you still need to register in order to post.
